Solve ratio and proportion

Introduction to Ratio and proportion is already done in my earlier post. Lets solve a few problems on ratio and proportion. Below are a few problems to make you understand it.

Solving problems on ratio and proportion

Q.1 .Check whether the following numbers form proportion or not

i)6,4,14,10 ii) 3.5,4.9,4.0,5.6

i) The ratio of first to second number

= 6/4 = 3/2

the ratio of third to fourth number

=14/10 = 7/5

Since the ratio are not equal, numbers 6,4,14,10 do not form proportion

ii) The ratio of first to second number is

= 3.5 / 4.9 = 35/49 =5/7

The ratio of third to the fourth number

4. 0 / 5.6 = 40/56 = 5/7

Since the two ratios are equal therefore the number 3.5,4.9,4.0 and 5.6 form proportion.

Q.2.Solve x , if

i) 4 : x : : 12 : 9

product of means = x * 12

product of extremes = 4 * 9

we know,

product of means = product of extremes

x * 12 = 4 * 9

12x = 36

x = 36/12

x = 3

There are two different problems solved , you see two different methods of solving them too. I have explained them in a very simple method. Were these problems easy to understand? You will have to let me know by just posting your comment on this.
