Percentage

My dear friends, what is your percentage in your previous class? I am sure a good percentage. Have you heard of the word "Percentage". It is commonly used in our day to day life, haven't you used it? Your parent would have asked you "What is the percentage you have scored"? I am sure this question would have been very common in our life, right? Let me explain you what this percentage is and how it is calculated.

Percent is derived from a latin word "Per Centum" which means per hundred or hundredths. In mathematics percentage is the way of expressing a number as a fraction for 100. Percent means “for every 100” or "out of 100."We have a symbol to represent percentage (%) symbol as a quick way to write a fraction with a denominator of 100. It is used to express large or small quantity compared to the other. Examples for writing percentage is 5%, 10%, 25% and so on....

I hope these definitions have given you a clear picture of what percentage mean. If not look at the examples below to understand more better.


Example for calculating percentage:-
Example1:- Convert the following into percentage

a) 2/5
=2/5 * 100/100
= 40/100= 40%

b) 3/4
= 3/4 * 100/100
= 75/100 = 75%


Similarily as i have converted fractions into percentage, lets try out converting percentage into fractions


Example2:- Convert percentage to fractions.


a) 25%
= 25/100= 1/4

b) 30%
= 30/100= 3/10
