Solving word problem

Math is about solving problems and to help you understand mathematics i have some problems which will help you understand the math concept better. The word problems mentioned below is specific for children in the 6th grade.

Look for some Word problem below.

Problem No.1:

If the sum of two consecutive number is 55, find out the two numbers?

Solution:

Let x be one number and x+1 be another number.
Therefore x+(x+1)=55
2x+1=55
2x=55-1
2x=54
x=54/2
therefore the sum of x=27
x+1= 27+1=28

Answer=The two numbers are 27 and 28.

Problem No.2

2) After 12 years George shall be 3 times as old as he was 4 years ago. Find his present age.

Solution:

Let George's present age be = x years

After 12 years = x + 12

4 years ago = x - 4

After 12 years he shall be 3 times as old as he was 4 years ago.

(x+12) = 3( x- 4)

x + 12 = 3x - 12

x -3x + 12 = 3x -3x - 12 ( subtract 3x on both sides)

-2x + 12 = -12

-2x + 12 -12 = -12 - 12 (subtract 12 on both sides)

-2x + 0 = -24

-2x = -24

-2x/-2 = -24/-2 ( divide (-2) on both sides)

x = 12

Answer:- Thus George's present age is 12 years.

These word problem will help you to find the value of x. Solve some more on your own. How informative was this post to you? Let me know your comments on this.
